My Journey with Huli Huli Recipes

I’m always looking for recipes that will help keep me from using my oven in the hot summer months. Using the gas grill outside is one of our go-to cooking methods in the summer when it’s too hot for the oven. The first recipe we made was for Grilled Huli Huli Chicken – we both loved it! Next, we tried a crockpot Huli Huli meal idea I’ll share next week. One of the other ideas we had turned out great – we grilled a pork tenderloin that we marinated overnight in Huli Huli sauce. Once the pork tenderloin has been marinated, grilling it and getting it onto the dinner table is easy!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 6 tablespoons ketchup
  • 6 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons sherry wine
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried ginger
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Spice World Minced Garlic or fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 pork tenderloin approximately 1-1.5 pounds

Instructions

  • Mix the brown sugar, ketchup, reduced-sodium soy sauce, sherry wine, dried ginger, and minced garlic in a small bowl. Pull out 1/2 cup and reserve it for basting/drizzling. Cover and refrigerate it.
  • Place the remaining marinade into a gallon zip lock bag along with the pork tenderloin. Close the bag and move it around to cover the tenderloin in the marinade. Place the bag into the refrigerator. Recommended: marinade for at least 8 hours. Suggestion: do this the night before.
  • Split the 1/2 cup of the marinade you reserved. You'll use half for basting as you grill and half as a drizzle for the meat once it's finished.
  • Remove the pork tenderloin from the bag of marinade and grill for 12-18 minutes or until done, turning it over at 6 minutes, and basting it as it cooks. I left it on the grill until the internal temperature reached 135 degrees. Then I let it rest for 10 minutes until the internal temperature reached 145 degrees.

A Few More Ideas and Some Interesting Reading

If you’re looking for other ideas for good dinners you can make, here are a few of our favorites:

I shared those four recipes in a post called Create a Grocery List Based on Sales When You Meal Plan. To learn how to save both money and time, read it! I used to “shop on the fly” and would find myself going to the grocery store almost daily to get what I needed for dinner. Once I changed how I was doing my shopping, I found that I could save money (quite a bit of money, actually) by making meals based on what was on sale in the grocery stores where I shopped. Now I shop weekly based on the meals we’ll have for the week – finally it’s much easier!
