Make it a point not to take a vacation that you need to put on credit cards. Your focus should be on planning an economical vacation. Don’t do something that will put you further into debt when figuring out how to afford a vacation. If you’re questioning how to travel on a budget, the key is planning wisely! If you overspend, you’ll feel guilty and may regret your decision after returning home.
Here’s an interesting idea: some companies allow you to pay for your vacation in advance using an installment payment plan. If you decide to try this, make sure you are dealing with a reputable company and not one that will go out of business and end up taking your money! It’s one thing to pay before you travel, but I wouldn’t recommend charging a trip you can’t afford.

Here’s the big question: Should you take a vacation if you can’t afford it? My answer would have to be no. A Staycation may be a better option if you know you can’t afford to travel. The best cheap vacation option may be to spend your time off at home while planning fun, affordable activities and possibly a short stay nearby.
What to Include and Not Include When Traveling
Once you have your budget figured out, think about what you could likely afford to spend on travel and what you should include. With a tight budget, you probably don’t want to spend money flying, and it’s also better if you don’t need to pay for a rental car – those expenses add up, especially with a larger family.
Start thinking about everything you’ll need to spend while away. This should include getting there (whether by plane or driving), the cost of your accommodations, food expenses, and activities. Remember that the goal is not to put yourself into debt to get away! Work at finding trip deals that let you get away within your budget.
Find Ways to Make Extra Money to Save for Your Trip
If you’re trying to figure out how to afford to travel, make it happen! Do whatever it takes to save up the money you’ll need in advance for your trip. I tend to decide when to travel using two criteria. First, I consider my schedule. Then, I look to find the best-priced options for a trip to the place I want to visit – my goal is to make sure I can travel inexpensively. I always avoid peak travel times to popular destinations. I don’t tend to travel over spring break, holidays, and when schools are out. However, many people with children avoid travel in the few weeks before kids return to school, so a late summer trip can still be an option! You may be able to put together a cheap vacation with kids right before school starts – just be sure to do your school shopping early and be ready to return to school before you leave!

If my destination requires me to fly, I turn to CheapOAir.com and experiment to see what I can find. You can search for round-trip fares to any destination for $199 or under per person. Sometimes, I find a trip idea I hadn’t considered once I realize I could get there for a reasonable price! They’re not just for airfare–you can also find great savings on hotels, car rentals, and vacation packages.
Kayak.com
One of my favorite websites when shopping for my trips is Kayak.com. When I search for airfare, once I’ve entered my departure and destination cities, as I begin searching for dates to fly, Kayak shows me the cheapest dates I can travel. The same is true as I search for hotels and other components of my trip. Even if I don’t book on Kayak, I use this information to know when it might be a good time to travel inexpensively.
Expedia.com
Another website I always use when I’m planning a cheap vacation is Expedia.com. I use this to search for airfare, places to stay, car rentals, vacation packages, and cruises. It can even help me find things to do at my destination.
Vrbo.com
We like to cook some of our meals when we travel to save money. That’s why we like vacation rentals. They include a kitchen and the things we’ll need to cook (pots, pans, dishes, silverware, etc). That’s when I turn to Vrbo.com to find the perfect vacation rental.
Just make sure you realize that when you book a vacation rental, you understand everything you’ll be paying for before you book (cleaning, deposit, taxes, and other charges that may be listed). When you click on a property and click on the price details underneath the total, you’ll see what the charge includes. If you’re uncertain about something, you can click to contact the host of a property you’re considering. Not eating out so much can help create a cheaper vacation. Yes, you may pay more for a vacation rental than a traditional hotel, but it can make travel affordable when you think about what you won’t need to spend.
Consider Booking an Unused Timeshare Unit or an All-Inclusive Stay
Here’s an option you may not have considered. Some companies allow you to book unused timeshare units at substantial discounts. I used to do this frequently through a company called SkyAuction based in New Jersey. They offered resort vacation certificates for as little as $399 a week with no required timeshare presentation. Before buying a certificate, fully understand the additional charges for the destination you want to visit. Other companies do this as well, and you’ll find them by doing a Google search for resort vacation certificates.
Some of our best cheap vacations were booked this way! Between 2004 and 2017, I booked seven travel items through companies, including SkyAuction: one set of first-class airfare tickets, two week-long stays in Orlando, one hotel stay at a luxury resort in Cozumel, Mexico, and three all-inclusive vacation packages (hotel and meals included). I love finding trip deals that get me where I want to go and within budget! It may be an excellent option for you when you try to figure out how to afford a vacation.

Depending on how tight your budget is, you may want to consider how to bring down the cost of your trip. If you’re hoping to put together a vacation on a budget, consider booking a larger vacation rental than you need for just you and your family – you may be able to save by traveling with friends or family and booking a larger vacation rental on Vrbo.com and then splitting the cost. When traveling to a place where friends or family live nearby, check to see if staying with them is possible instead of renting a place to reduce expenses.
Consider House-Sitting or Pet-Sitting
I must return to the all-important question I’ve asked before – should you take a vacation if you can’t afford it? No! What about this idea – If you know you can’t afford to pay for accommodations, consider house-sitting! Some companies connect people requesting house sitters with people who are willing to try this unique strategy, including House Sitters America (annual membership fee of $49 to become a house sitter) or Mind My House (yearly membership fee of $29 with listings in the US and other countries). Some companies also have jobs for house and pet sitters, like Trusted Housesitters and Rover. Picture how much cheaper your vacation can be when you’re not paying the high cost of staying in a hotel!
Taking this further, AARP wrote an article that might interest senior travelers. But there’s no reason this couldn’t apply to others as well. Can You Barter for Accommodations?
And that brings me to this idea – bartering! The concept of bartering goes way back! But have you given it any thought when you travel? Barter Week, a yearly tradition, takes place annually in November, but there’s no reason it couldn’t happen at other times, too! It involves finding a place to stay and seeing if the owner would be open to a barter in exchange for your stay. What a great idea! Imagine how much cheaper your vacation can be if you’re not paying for accommodations.

I searched Barter Week’s website and found that some properties accept bartering arrangements year-round! A bed and breakfast on the Big Island of Hawaii provides stays in exchange for developing online content, housekeeping, reception, carpentry, and construction projects. A Wisconsin inn will barter for advertising, gardening, and lodging swaps. A homeowner in California is interested in doing home exchanges or having guests help with repairs and landscaping. Someone in Costa Rica is interested in having professional photographs taken, or they’ll consider having guests who can teach things like yoga, meditation, art, birdwatching, or other things that might interest other guests. How’s that for a vacation on a budget?
Realize That Timing Can Be Everything with Affordable Trip Planning
Some destinations require you to plan and book in advance to find the best deals, while others seem to have excellent prices popping up at the last minute. Regardless, it’s a good idea to start planning early so you can figure out the right time to book. Some cheap vacations require planning in advance, while others may surprise you at the last minute.
Try to Be Flexible to Save Money on Travel When Figuring Out How to Afford a Vacation
Sometimes, you must travel on specific dates, but you can be flexible at other times. I use the flexible date search feature as I plan my trip to see if I can save money by altering my dates. I also try to travel in the off-season rather than the high season. When looking for ways to afford a vacation, I’m very flexible with my plans if it saves me money.
When I know money is tight but feel like I have to get away, I’m open to changing my destination if that’s what it takes. Sometimes, I can still plan a trip to the destination where I want to go, but I find myself needing to stay a little farther away from the action.

Here’s an example: when going to Disney World, it’s great to stay on property if you can afford it. But what if you can’t, and you know your kids have their hearts set on going there this year? Consider staying a little further away in a vacation rental in Clermont (22 miles) or Davenport (18 miles). Some of our best vacations were done this way! We rent a house with a private screened-in pool. Do you know what the other advantage of staying a little further from the action might be? Restaurant costs are lower, too!
Most people want to be as close as possible, but I don’t mind a little further away to save money. The key to frugal vacation planning is often to be flexible. Find ways to make your vacation cheaper but still attainable!
Find Ways to Not Overpack – Low-Cost Vacations Mean Not Paying for Extra Luggage Weight!
This is especially important if you’re flying to your destination. Know your airline’s baggage limits and stay within them. If you’re staying in a vacation rental, you may have a washer/dryer. That eliminates the need to pack so many clothes changes! Focus on being able to afford to travel by not overpacking and needing to pay for overweight luggage. The charges can add up!
But if you’re driving instead of flying, you may not be faced with limiting what you pack. Think about what you can bring to save money once you arrive at your destination. Things like snacks, food, and things to keep kids entertained are great ideas to bring with you. When we drive to a vacation rental, we pack a cooler full of food to reduce our food expenses. We eat the food while traveling and on vacation to cut costs. We still plan on eating out some, but not for every meal.
Reduce Transportation Costs if Possible
If you fly to your destination, decide if you can get away without renting a car (but only if you feel it will be cheaper in the long run). Is public transportation readily available where you’re going? If so, plan on using it. In some places, walking or biking works just fine, and I’ve even stayed at vacation rentals that included free bicycles for your use.
Cut Down on Food & Other Expenses for Economical Vacations

I’ve already pointed this out, but it’s important enough to mention again. Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you need to eat like a tourist at all the catchiest spots for every meal! Vacation rentals likely include kitchen facilities that are equipped for you to prepare meals. Some hotels may have kitchens so you can prepare some of your meals and snacks. Even when we stay at a hotel, we always look for a studio or suite that has a way to cook. It may seem like it’s paying more, but when you realize what you can save by vacationing this way, you’ll see the point, like I did. Ask around once you arrive and find out where locals like to dine – that may save you money when you eat out. Just because you’re vacationing on a budget doesn’t mean you can never eat out!
Find Ways to Lower Your Activity Costs to Afford to Travel
Look, I get it—when you travel with kids and plan a trip to Orlando, you can’t avoid seeing Mickey! But do you need to pay for park admission tickets every day? Take Advantage of Benefits You Already Have
If you’re trying to find ways to put together the best cheap vacation, think about what you already have in your wallet that can save you money! Do you have AAA for roadside assistance and towing? AAA includes shopping, travel, dining, and entertainment discounts, so check if places you want to go (even theme parks) are included. If you are a member of AARP, they also offer similar discounts. Even your library card can get you discounts on places like museums, aquariums, and zoos! Look for reciprocal admission discounts if you already have a zoo, aquarium, or museum membership – some can be substantial.
